Stock Exchange Open London to Brighton 19 May 2001
The Stock Exchange and Open London to Brighton was held in good conditions on Saturday – not too cold, not too hat and not too windy. The course which generally avoids the busiest roads is now more hilly, longer and more testing than it was years ago but this did not deter Surrey Walking Club’s Ian Statter who recorded his third successive victory in nine and a half hours. Second Claim Surrey and Stock Exchange member, Paul King was in the lead for forty miles and looked the stronger and easier but Ian was not far behind. Sure enough he was able to use his speed towards the end to finish some 10 minutes in front of the winner of the Stock Exchange Championship. Chris Flint, also second claim, Surrey managed to pick up after looking to be struggling most of the way and broke his 10 hour target by seven minutes. Ron Powell of Enfield who had reached 65 the day before bravely finished despite being pushed into a hedge just after the halfway mark by two young louts. Otherwise it was a successful race with considerable support from other race walking enthusiasts.
1st Ian Statter (Surrey) 9:29:21; 2nd Paul King (Belgrave) 9:35:33; 3rd Chris Flint (London Vids) 9:52:13
1st lady Cathy Duhig (Royston) 10:22:22; 2nd lady Jill Green (London Vids) 11:00:17;   3rd lady Sue Clements (London Vids) 11:07:45
