The Club also held an open track 5 km

age groups. The clear winner was Mark Easton whose return from a short

come. The conditions were hot and sticky.

Report for 16/5/2004
National Vets 20km and Senior County
Championships
After a quieter period with no Club races or
Championships Surrey Walking Club have been
active in several venues. Last weekend Shaun Lightman showed some of his
old form by knocking some 5 minutes from recent times to take the National
silver medal in the over 60 group over 20km. The even was held in coldish
conditions at Sutton Park near Birmingham. The second half of the race saw
those who had been too adventurous at the start of the undulating course
being caught rapidly as he came through the field.
Over the very much
shorter 2km Southern Vets league Shaun and Peter Hannell were out
for second Claim Blackheath and took 1st in the Over 40 and
over 50 groups. This was followed this weekend by the County Championships
with Shaun in Midddlesex and several of the Club in the Surrey event at
Kingston. Ian Statter was third over 3km while son David won the Under 15
event. It was good to see the Race Walk appearing once again after a few
years absence with a field of 10 which included a very fast time by a
visiting South African international lady competitor.
Results: 2nd Over 60. S.Lightman 2hr 2 min 251 sec.

Report for 24/3/2004 Sheffield Open 10km
Surrey Walking Club's Shaun Lightman ventured north to Yorkshire for this,
one of the few remaining, nationally known, road event. The field was not
as large as hoped but even taking this into account Shaun was very happy
to get 4th place. In the not unfamiliar circumstances of a fairly hot day
coming with no warning during a cool Spring, many of the competitors
wilted after too enthusiastic a start. The latter stages saw Ligtman
catching and passing those he had seen disappear out of range. The real
str of the day was Robert Bain from neighbouring Club Blackheath & Bromley
who won the Junior 5km in a tight race against Lloyd Finch of Leicester
who is one of Britain's representatives in the forthcoming World Junior
Cup.
Results: 4. S.Lightman 59 min 27 sec

Report for Leamington
National 20km 20/3/2004
Once again the British Race
Walking Association decided, following previous successful events to
combine their largest Championships with international events for the
different age groups male and female at Leamington Spa. Among the several
races one rather lighter 1 mile event was put on for "Legends of Race
Walking" with many former Commonwealth, Olympic and other UK stars
including Surrey Walking Club's 1968 Olympian - Shaun Lightman. Shaun also
did the main Men's event straight afterwards which may account for his
slightly slower time. As far as the Club's current fastest performer,
Chris Cheeseman, was concerned there was already enough to contend with.
It may give some indication of the conditions to note that there were no
trains running South out of Birmingham and bus replacements were being
used. In some unsheltered places on the circular park course the walkers
were often blown backwards by the gusts. In addition Chris had to attempt
to match the speed of the very quick Spanish and Italian competitors and
shoe problems which caused him to walk one lap with only one shoe.
Nevertheless he achieved a creditable 7th place even though the times were
all inevitably slow which was unfortunate for a World Cup qualifying race.
Shaun and Peter Hannell struggled for a considerably longer time but both
completed the course so Surrey finished 5th team which with tight judging
and several disqualifications and an unusually high number of "did not
finish" entries on the results sheet. At least there was some satisfaction
among those that did but not on account of the times!. Let us hope that
our European friends will return to battle the English weather next year..

Report for Leamington Open 10km:
14/3/2004
In anticipation next week's big event - the National 20km at Leamington
Spa - Chris Cheeseman used last week's Open at the same venue to test his
fitness and was rewarded with an excellent 2nd place in a strong field.
For the same reason the top names unfortunately avoided the fourth and
last Cambridge Harriers Bexley League race of the season although it
incorporated the Kent County Championships. In spite or, perhaps, because
of this, the field was very competitive to take this opportunity for a
high placing. Of the Surrey Walking Club representatives it was Shaun
Lightman who scored over all of his close rivals to break the 57 30
barrier. This represented a good step back towards his pace before injury
and illness. The conditions varied between cold rain and hot sunshine but
overall it was a very pleasant and friendly event with frequent position
changes.
We await the National next week to see how Chris Cheeseman and Mark
Easton, both in good form, and the rest of the slower but improving team
can compete in the biggest National event of the year.
2. C.Cheeseman 44 m 15s.

LPR OPEN 9 KILOMETRES
7th march
Just a reminder that this series is continuing towards its
300th meeting. The opening meeting of the 2004 campaign
failed to pull in sufficient to frame a yacht handicap (only 11)
and a level start race ensued. Where were you all? One man
missing was Organiser Steve Wynn, who was absent for only the 3rd time in
the history of the event (Millwall were at home in the FA Cup, and his
attendance record there is equally admirable). So a triumvirate of
Dave Ainsworth, Harry Jefford and Dave Sharpe appeared to keep order.
PETER CASSIDY (3rd) kept up his late 2003 form, while the Romford Market
Deputy Superintendent PETER HODKINSON (4th) took 4 minutes off his
previous Blackheath time and suffered afterwards! KIM HOWARD
was another entrant with a good time. Let’s see more there, at
the OLD ADDEYANS CLUB, at the Junction of Blackheath Park and Morden Road,
Blackheath, London SE3. The course is quiet and the facilities good.
It’s better than a training session! |
