Surrey Walking Club
members were prominent in the 5 miles race at Battersea Park although
missing out on 1st places in all but one age group. VAC hold a
popular series of 5 monthly runs and Race Walking races of 5 miles in
summer months with the June event being the Championship for each 5 year
age group. Although, unsurprisingly, at the rear of the field, Jack
Fitzgerald stuck to his guns for another successful race in his
remarkable, long walking and running career. It was a pleasant evening
without the extreme heat seen recently and the Park looked very attractive
with the usual crowds of joggers, cyclists and roller-blades. Richard
Brown started steadily but used his experience of much longer events to
maintain his pace as he gained places throughout. Possibly many enjoyed
the evening in too relaxed a manner and the last lap became faster and
faster as competitors saw the chance to catch faster colleagues who in
turn realised a major effort was required to keep their usual precedence.
