Report for 11/2/2006 : Cambridge Harriers League 5km:

Surrey Walking Club was one of the few Clubs with a full team out for this, the third race of the series. Once again Paul King was at the front of the Surrey pack but the others were closer to him than last week. Such a short race is bound to be competitive and even Shaun, who had declared himself only part fit after a short layoff, had Hannell in his sights (unbeknown to the latter). He was unable to close the gap but did retain the usual adjacent placing if not in the usual order. After a freezing week the weather was fairly mild and sunny so there were no excuses and performances were sufficiently strong as not to require them. Although not a large men’s field the women made up a total of over 20 and it was good to see that most of the female competitors were considerably below 40 instead of mainly above like the men.

Results:

Men:

5.P.King 28 min 14 sec; 7.P.Hannell 28 min 56 sec; 8.S.Lightman 30 min 10 sec; 12.D.Hoben 33 min 24 sec.

Report for 5/2/2006 : London Open 10km:

Back to Victoria Park on a much more friendly day than the New Year event as far as temperature and even a little sun was concerned saw somewhat weaken Surrey Walking Club team racing not only the best London Clubs but visitors from Leicester and Sheffield. The course is fairly flat so little change of pace and effort – a fast one for the fittest and a test of determination for those unable to keep up not helped by the distance possibly being somewhat over.  Second claim member Paul King had the best race going straight past Hannell and disappearing into the distance to finish well inside the hour. Meanwhile further down Nolan Simmons and David Hoben both battled pushed on for average times if the length was in fact slightly over. Not surprisingly Surrey missed out on a team placing but hopefully benefited from over an hour of hard work. Among the judges was Surrey’s past President and current handicapper, Brian Ficken, who also now occupies the exalted position of President of the Race Walking Association – the national governing body for our branch of athletics. Congratulations to Brian!

Results:
Men:
14.P.King 57 min 56 sec; 18.C.Flint 60 min 59 sec; 19P.Hannell 61 min 37 sec; 25. N.Simmons 65 min 34 sec; 29.D.Hoben 68 min 17 sec.

Women:
8. Mrs.P.Ficken 75 min 57 sec.
