Report for 21/01/2006
: Steyning
Open 15km:
Some Surrey Walking Club members never seem to have enough of their
sport - after 10 miles last week some were out for the Steyning 15km
which is less than a mile shorter. At least the scenery on a sunny,
not too cold, afternoon was somewhat better just on the north side
of the South Downs starting in the beautiful old town of Steyning.
Some years ago the race, which still starts in the middle of the
High Street, made several circuits round the edge of the town, but
traffic has forced the course out into the hills on a fairly hard
but picturesque out and back course. At the halfway turn Flint was
almost half a minute ahead, but former
Olympian Lightman is a determined fellow and by the end positions
were reversed as newcomer David Hoben plugged away to finish not too
far behind after a procession of hills which all seem uphill both
going out and coming home.
Meanwhile in Leicester another S.Lightman appeared in the results
albeit the Ladies race as it was Shaun’s daughter coming home as
first lady in that club’s 10 mile championship having also conquered
some steep ascents. Like David, also recent conversion to
race-walking, times are still reducing race by race and targets are
set and exceeded.
Results:
10.S.Lightman 89 min 07 sec; 11.C.Flint 89 min 39 sec; 13.D.Hoben
104 min 04 sec.
Leicester Club 10 miles Championships:
5th overall & 1st Woman Sara Lightman 116 min
15 sec.

:
Surrey Walking Club 10 Mile
Championship:
The Club's 10 mile championship in the middle of
January is no picnic; however a turnout in double figures showed the
determination of race-walking competitors to be not easily put off.
Even Jack Fitzgerald at 83 completed the first 8 miles until time
constraints forced retirement …until the next race of course. The
reigning champion, Mark Easton, came to support the event although
back problems limited his participation to 5km after demonstrating
his speed and leaving the others behind. The serious competitors set
about their task in good heart with relatively mild conditions and
first Surrey man, Paul King, once again continuing his recent good
form. However it was Pam Ficken, winner of the ladies’ championship,
but towards the rear of the field, whose performance had the
handicapper foxed to easily win the handicap event. Meanwhile the
main pack chased Paul without success even though Shaun Lightman
briefly overhauled him only to have to let him go again – a
different story from last week. Chris Flint also went by Shaun in a
great effort to 2nd handicap. Altogether a potentially
difficult race turned out to be a very competitive event.
Results (Championship / Handicap in brackets):
2.(-/7) P.King 96 min 36 sec; 3.(-/2) C.Flint 98
min 09 sec; 4.(1st first claim champion/3) S.Lightman 98 min 46 sec
16; 6.(2/8) I.Statter 100 min 24 sec; 7.(3/4) N.Simmons 108 min 50
sec; 8.(4/5) P.Crane 110 min 12 sec; 9.(5/6) D.Hoben 114 min 06
sec;10.(1st lady/1 st h’cp) Pam Ficken 122 min 50 sec;
also J.Fitzgerald 119 min 59 sec(retired. after 8 miles).

Report for 01/01/2006
: Victoria
Park 10km:
Victoria Park, Hackney is usually a cold place
for this first race of the year exposed to the East winds as it is.
This year this friendly event, with its New Year greetings, was no
exception even though most of the South East was relatively mild.
Renovation in preparation for 2012 (the Olympics being held
fortunately in the warmer Summer) meant no race next year or
possibly ever again and the usual fair turnout sought to show this
event to be popular. Surrey Walking Club had 6 out including one
lady, Pam Ficken. The Men’s race was seasonably slightly slow but
there was good competition around the hour mark from our team.
Ilford AC turned out in large enough numbers to field two teams and
we narrowly failed to beat their B team to finish 3rd.
Individually, second Claim member Paul King continued to lead the
way among the Surrey contingent and finished half a minute ahead of
our Shaun Lightman with another competitor between them. It was good
to see Peter Crane coming up to speed and edging out newcomer David
Hoben with both well inside the 70 minute mark and beating 11 minute
mph.
Results:
8.P.King 59 min 48 sec; 10.S.Lightman 60 min 28
sec; 11.C.Flint 61 min 33 sec; 15.P.Crane 68 min 07 sec; 16. D.Hoben
68 min 22 sec.
