Johnson Bowl Match  14 July 2006

Report by Peter Hannell

This was the 104th year of the annual race between Surrey Walking Club and Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC which is now held over a 4 mile course near the Blackheath & Bromley HAC headquarters in Hayes Kent. Unfortunately the several excellent young walkers from Blackheath were unable to be present so it was left to the older generation to continue the tradition this year. The unexpected opportunity to, once again, win race which has rightly been the prerogative of our young stars proved a strong inspiration to Shaun Lightman who showed his excellent current form and soon left the rest in his dust. The other Surrey members continued battling with their BBHAC rivals and Nolan Simmons using the competition to get ever nearer to the front of the field. As most of the Surrey members are also second claim to Blackheath as we use the Hayes HQ for regular training nights every Wednesday the battles were of a friendly nature as was the presentation back at the HQ.

Results:

1. S.Lightman 38 min 5 sec; 2. P.Hannell 39 min 3 sec; 4. N.Simmons 40 min 53 sec; 6. D.Hoben 45 min 33 sec.
