Vets AC  5 mile Walking Championships                           14 June  2007

This race was the third of the Veterans AC league held in Battersea Park but it also incorporated the VAC Championships and hence saw rather more out than last time although injury still ruled out several of the potential age group leaders. Surrey members filled over half of the field including two of our less regular contenders – international, Mark Easton and Lyn Atterbury who is now based in Poland where Race Walking is both popular and very successful. As expected Mark was able to get away from the field easily and comfortably broke the 40 minute barrier despite the lack of competition. Lyn finished just over a minute behind Hannell having closed during the last lap but ran out of road. Further back Nolan Simmons took the M65 group but was left over a minute behind Peter Crane. Our sole female representative Kathy Crilley, the Club webmaster, was only just outside of 5 miles in the hour and took the W55 title. Altogether it was a good evening for Surrey Walking Club racers in pleasant conditions.

Results:

 1(1st M40). M.Easton 39 min 26 sec; 3(1st M60). P.Hannell 47 min 44 sec; 4(2nd M60). L.Atterbury 48 min 29 sec; 5(3rd M60). C.Flint 49 min 4sec; 8(4th M60) P.Crane 51 min 57 sec; 9.(1st M65). N.Simmons 53 min 7 sec; 11(1st W55). Kathy Crilley 60 min 12 sec.

London Business Houses League 3km                                    20 June  2007

Unfortunately commercial pressures are such that support for and participation in intercompany athletics has fallen but the rest of us have gained as the events are now open and a very pleasant evening provided the opportunity to enjoy a fast test. The three Surrey Walking Club members who travelled up to Willsden found an evenly spread field and all had a target to catch. In David Hoben’s case the competitor ahead was Nolan Simmons and the gap held within 100 metres until Nolan’s last lap sprint. A final difference of under a minute represented a good effort from David particularly as Nolan, though slower than hoped, had improved on his last effort at the distance by almost half a minute.

Results:

Willsden 3km: 3. P.Hannell 16 min 53.6 sec; 5. N.Simmons 19 min 35.1 sec; 6. D.Hoben 20 min 26.4 sec.

LPR 9km                                                                                        24 June 2007

Sunday saw the latest edition of the London Postal region 9km league – one of the institutions still supporting athletics strongly. Fast improving Stephen Crane had another good race despite steady if light rain and what is a hilly 5 lap circuit. With start  times based on handicap Stephen started towards the back of the field but came through well to catch Hannell on the line and make the top half of finishers despite a none too generous handicap.

Results:
2 (6th Hcp) S.Crane 49 min 38 sec; 5.(7th Hcp) P.Hannell 54 min 39 sec
