Cambridge Harriers
Bexley League 5km.
With 5 Surrey Walking Club out this week we could not match 10 in last
week’s London 10km but with international Mark Easton out and a huge
leap in improvement from Steven Crane there was team quality at Bexley.
After a week of snow and ice the day turned mild and almost sunny. This
was ideal for the challenge of the summertime distance of 5km – even if
the course is by no means a flat track with a long and not insignificant
climb each of the four laps. Mark was with the leaders from the off and
though not at his best held on with only the winner getting away by 20
seconds. Not too far behind Steven left Dad, Peter far behind and by 2km
had gone past Hannell, whose attempt at early speed was not paying off,
and did his best to stay in touch with walkers who had finished way
ahead only a few weeks ago. Peter Crane himself also is making progress
even if not quite as dramatic as Steven. A more serious training regime
can certainly can pay off!

Bryce 10km, Horsham & Essex 10 miles, Chigwell,
17 February 2007 |
Two events this weekend
rather weakened the fields but Surrey Walking Club were represented
at both with David Hoben not afraid to do both races. The surprising
factor in the Horsham race was Olympian Shaun Lightman time of 67
minutes but we are assured this was not simply sloth but a
scientific determination of pace at 80% maximum heart rate – we
await developments at 100%.
In pretty well, ideal
conditions Hannell raced evenly to break the magic hour while
Heather Fenton returned from a few months break to achieve a
reasonable time and pull away from Shaun. In much colder conditions
i
n Essex Steven Crane once
again demonstrated his improved form with a speed near to 10km per
hour for 60% further – equivalent to well inside 58 min for a 10km
race. His performance was followed by another excellent effort from
Mick Harran in the M65 group.

Southern Area 20km
Bexley 24 February 2007
Another step up in distance to twelve and
a half miles of Cambridge Harriers’ hilly course might have been
regarded as more pain than pleasure but a fairly successful outcome made
it all worthwhile for most of the 8 Surrey Walking Club participants.
Unfortunately one of our number found himself unprepared for the
distance and finished early – but was able to watch a very creditable
effort by his daughter, Sarah Lightman, who finished the course 40
seconds inside her 150 minute target. Our first man home was again
Stephen Crane who managed to more or less hold onto a group of faster
walkers towards the front of the field. In fact, after tiring slightly
at around 10 miles, he finished strongly, unlike some of the others, and
began to catch them again. Besides his individual Essex medal, he also
collected a third team medal together with father, David, also in the
team. As this was a Championship race judging was strict but no Surrey
members failed to satisfy the Officials. The Club hopes the experience
will enable it to produce a team for the National 20km event in a few
weeks time when the course will probably be considerably flatter.
