The Southern Track & Field
Championship for Race Walking and Multi-events was as usual held in
Bedford as logistics prevent holding all the events in the main
venue. The excellent facilities at this track made it a great day
for spectators enjoying the hot, if rare, sunshine. The competitors
found the sudden rise in temperature more problematic which affected
almost all. For this reason Surrey Walking Club’s Steven Crane’s
relatively poor time should not distract from his silver medal and
while the field was disappointing he made the required effort.
Surrey had a commendable three out to support the event but
unfortunately the strict judging appropriate for such a high level
event ruled out a brave effort by David Hoben to find some pace.
