 May 2007
Surrey County Veterans Championships 3km Walk                   26 May 2007

Clashes with other events restricted the field a little but 7 out was not too bad for the 2007 event which was held in rather poorer conditions than recently – but at least it wasn't too hot for this sprint event. Having returned to racing after a spell of running Surrey Walking Club's Heather Fenton came back strongly to win the race from the second finisher – also a lady. Nolan Simmons found himself short of speed training and finished around 100 metres adrift of Heather having held on to the leader's pace for too long. David Hoben had a good race with the incentive of getting close to Nolan and managed to finish less than a minute adrift. Back in 7th Jack Fitzgerald – 85 early next year – put in a creditable 27 minute effort which, to put it in context, is well over 4 miles an hour.

Results:

1(1st W50). Heather Fenton 18 min 24.1 sec; 3(1st M65). N.Simmons 19 min 7.9 sec; 5. D.Hoben 20 min 1.7 sec; 7(1st M80). J.Fitzgerald 27 min 0 sec.

VAC League, Battersea Park 5 miles:                                          15 May 2007

In the latest edition of this monthly summer fixture for both runners and racewalkers both races were a little down in numbers for no obvious reason. If it was the heavy rain earlier on in the day those absent missed a typically pleasant evening in the Park. As often happens, Surrey Walking had a better turnout than other Clubs with 5 on the line. A fast start saw Hannell some 50 metres clear over the first mile but the group behind were beginning to close with Chris Flint leading the charge. Peter Crane had a good race to hold Chris in sight and leave Nolan Simmons further behind than usual. The last mile saw the gap at the front down to less than 50 metres but a last effort from the leader left Chris back some 80 metres at the finish. Although a fuller field would have given faster times those who did make the effort were rewarded with a very pleasant but competitive race.

Results:
1. P.Hannell 48 min 17 sec; 2. C.Flint 48 min 56 sec; 3. P.Crane 50 min 5 sec; 5. N.Simmons 53 min 19 sec; 7. D.Hoben 58 min 22 sec.
