This is the second year
Surrey Walking Club has held its Open 10km to replace the former
very popular Met Police race. On this occasion the SWC race also
hosted the Southern Area Championships so a field of over 40 was
expected and achieved. For such a high profile event the judging
was stricter and on a tighter basis than for some less formal
events and 4 disqualifications was not an unreasonable outcome
although unfortunately this included one of our own members. In
spite of this a return to some form by Shaun Lightman in support
of an excellent 4th from Stephen and a creditable 14th
from brother David Crane gave the home club 2nd team
medals. Bright sunshine warmed the cold January air and gave an
ideal afternoon even if some performances showed the effect of
more Christmas pudding than training over the holiday period.
For Stephen another step in his progress – for rest of the
Surrey
contingent a reminder of the work to be done to get those times
back on track.
