Vets AC 5 miles, Battersea Park, 24th June 2008

A busy week for Surrey Walking Club with two races, both significant to members.

The first was the usual Battersea Park Veterans 5 miles but with a twist. Mike Bushell of BBC TV decided to make race walking one of his “try it out” TV spots and, with a little training from ex-international Carl Lawton of Belgrave, he gave a good account of himself in front of the camera as a novice competitor.

The attention from the BBC made the race much bigger event with non-veterans and a field of almost 50 for this , very welcome, publicity. Among the field SWC was able to put out it’s usual 7 competitors although some of the names were different and the performances almost universally good due, it is supposed, to the extra adrenalin on this occasion. There was a tight battle between Lyn Atterbury, who had come back from Poland especially, and Mick Harran with Lyn coming out 5 seconds ahead

Blackheath & Bromley HAC 3km Track Walk Championship

The next date saw the now traditional joint 3km track race including championships for both Surrey Walking Club and Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC but open to all at Norman Park, Bromley.

This year, coincidentally, it was held the day after the above race in Battersea Park with several doing both. The outcome was a wide spread of times including fast 14 min 21 sec from Under 20 Tom Bosworth (Tonbridge) followed not too far behind with a personal best from Surrey’s Stephen Crane. Ian Statter comfortably caught and left Peter Hannell but was more pleased with son Andrew’s improved Under13 time in the 1600 metres. Some way behind Stephen Crane was father Peter who after a good performance at Battersea was still in fast mode to finish not far behind Ian and Peter H.
