Leicester remains one of the areas of the country where race
walking remains a strong tradition and the main local club’s 15
miles championship holds its prestige even if the formidable
distance has reduced numbers considerably from its heydays.
Surrey Walking Club’s Lightman family enjoyed good results on
their foray North with Shaun in the medals with 3rd
place on an undulating country course in good conditions. This
despite having to stay with slower competitors on occasion where
minimal course marking could have lost those unfamiliar with the
roads. Sarah went one step better with 2nd place and
a significant personal best.
