RWA National 10 Miles
Championship. 16/02/08
The
National 10 miles used to be the top event of the year until
falling numbers resulted in its cessation some 7 years ago
but on the initiative of Enfield Harriers it was tried again
in conjunction with the Essex Championship and their own
league race. It was quite a success with over 70 out on a
bright winter’s day around the new Picketts Lock arena in
the Lea Valley. Surrey Walking Club had over 10 on the
programme but various injuries removed one or two of the
fastest competitors. Nevertheless the team well were well
represented through the field with Stephen Crane, first
home, just making the first 10 after showing his usual
determination to hold one of his rivals with a similar
target to himself he finally came out on top. Shaun Lightman
started steadily and was able to pick up the pace around
half way and pass several others and beat 100 minutes - not
too far behind second claim members King and Flint who had
started quickly and avoided slowing too much to end with
good times. In the ladies race Shaun’s daughter Sarah gained
a team winners medal for Leicester, her first claim club.
