All race reports by Peter Hannell

Southern Vets League Kent division 2km walk  2nd May

Surrey Walking Club members  were active in a number of low key events last week but with significant results. Pride of place belongs to Lightman’s victory over athletes up to 30 years younger than himself by a large margin in the M35-49 group. Hannell also won the over 50 group but by a smaller margin both representing their second claim Club, Blackheath. Meanwhile at a faster 5km senior event, held in conjunction with the RWA younger age group championships, Stephen Crane was slightly below his best but still achieved a fair time while the same might also be said of Mick Harran in the veterans 3km

              M35: 1.S.Lightman 11 min 4.3 sec. M50: 1.P.Hannell 11 min 29.0 sec.

Victoria Park 4th May

              Senior 5km: 7.S.Crane 26 min 17 sec; 15. D.Hoben 34 min 37 sec.

              Veterans 3km: 8(1st M65). M.Harran 17 min 34 sec.

Pednor 5 miles 5th May

On the Bank holiday one of the best races from the point of view is held near Chesham, Bucks and Mick Harran and David Hoben made the trip across the M25 ring. In ideal good weather, at least for the spectators, Mick achieved 6th place and first M65 on this beautiful but hilly course.

              6(1st M65): M.Harran 51 min 0 sec; 15. D.Hoben 57 min 26 sec.

Steyning 3km 6th May

              2. P.Hannell 17 min 2 sec.

Surrey  County Vets Champs 24th May 2008

Despite the forecasts of the terrible weather on its way, conditions were in fact only a little windy for the Surrey County 3km track walk at Kingsmeadow.
Surrey Walking Club had 5 members out for this popular walk. Ian Statter led the field for almost the whole being caught by the winner 50 metres from the finished but inside 17 minutes. As usual Mick Harran held his younger clubmate for as long as possible easily pulling away from Hannell. First, not surprisingly, in the M85 group Jack Fitzgerald was pleased with time – a new record as he is the first to reach this age group still walking well. It was good to see Tony Harran, Mick’s, son performing well in his first, but hopefully not last, serious attempt at race-walking.

Results:

1. C.Lawton (Bels M60) 16 min 50.3 sec; 2(M50). I.Statter 16 min 56.3 sec; 3(M70). M.Harran 17 min 20.7 sec; 4(M65). P.Hannell 17 min 45.6 sec; 5.A.Harran (HHH M45) 18 min 47.8 sec; 7(M55). D.Hoben 20 min 8.7 sec; 11(M85). J.Fitzgerald 27 min 23 sec.
