Southern Area 20km Race Walking Championships, 28th Feb 04
The Southern Area 20km Race Walking Championships were once again held on the sea-front Parade at Littlehampton on Saturday with a field of almost 30 despite a clash with a major race in the Isle of Man. The venue offers a straight, fast and naturally flat out-and-back lap of 2.5 kilometres but is subject o strong winds. The competitors who braved a cold day with the threat of snow were in fact favoured with little wind and enough sunshine to keep them cool but not frozen. Nothing could prevent 2 hours of flat road becoming a hard competitive event with every competitor fighting to hold or catch those nearest. 2nd claim member Chris Flint put his 100 mile experience to complete a determined outing more strongly than those around him while the Surrey team’s efforts to finish a complete team in spite of somewhat not performing at their best was rewarded with 3rd place.

Results:
12. C.Flint 2hr 0m 50s; 14. I.Statter 2h 3m 17s; 16. S.Lightman 2hr 7m 16s; 19. P.Hannell 2 hr 9m 52s.
