National 100 Miles Championship, 30th Jul 05
Surrey Walking Club had a team victory in this years Race Walking Association 100 miles mens’ race by 280 points to Birchfield with 268 although this score excludes the effect of their highest scorer in the race – Sandra Brown in 2nd overall. Not for the first time has this lady beaten almost all of the men, including husband Richard who himself was 4th out of the 80 starters of whom 38 completed the full 100 miles inside the limit of 24 hours. The two Browns were separated by another Surrey WC member – Ian Statter – who also had a good race. Although 100 miles is a little too far for most of us it often gets the biggest fields of all of the National Championships and of course needs good turnout to justify the huge amount of planning and organisation that is required. Surrey had a further 3 competitors in the race although the last “only” managed 80 miles!
