|The 2006 Championship was held in Ramsey, Isle of Man, the centre of a great interest in Race Walking and several prominent Clubs. The time and expense of the trip may have put off some of the usual participants but on the start line as many as 74 turned out for 5 laps of 20 miles, including several Dutch and other non-UK walkers. Also on the start line were Sandra and Richard Brown, of Surrey Walking Club – easily the most well known and best UK competitors at this distance. Not for the first time Sandra not only won the Women’s event but finished 2nd overall. Quite an achievement in very difficult conditions where even her very experienced husband Richard had to retire at 60 miles and was taken off to hospital suffering from dehydration but fortunately was soon recovered. The other Surrey Walking Club starter Chris Flint suffered no such difficulty and finished
in 13th over two hours behind Sandra but over 3 hours inside the 24 hour limit as did 42 of the starters.
