| Generally the Winter season has begun with 7 mile/10km races but there has been a tendency for some years to mix in some 5km events like this, the second of the four Cambridge League events. This is aimed at providing a race which is within the normal range of the younger members and thus provides opportunity for Men, Women and the Juniors all to race together. In fact such was the appeal of this event that our friends in Essex used this for one of their programme for the Essex league despite its Kent venue. This in turn gave a bigger and wider field on a course with some hills but certainly faster than last week’s Christmas Cup. The terrain and the extra competition led, in general, to quicker times. Our second member home, Paul King, for example, was more than a minute up this week. Shaun Lightman, first home for SWC, was officiating last week but gave a clear indication of his good form on his return and was some 80 metres ahead of Paul having made a fast start and held on well. The additional competition also enabled David Hoben to cut his time by more than half a minute. |
