| Like most of Steyning AC races this race starts in the High Street in the centre of this charming old Sussex town. Traffic is comparatively light in the area so they are, with a little assistance from officials across the by-pass, able to use an out and back road course into the countryside. A slightly damp Saturday afternoon made for ideal racing conditions and a fairly small field enthusiastically set off out of town and up the first of many sharp but short hills. This is a fast course for the fittest who push hard up the slopes and use the downs to pick up speed but slow for the less fit who slow on the ups but whose technique limits the amount they can make up. Surrey Walking Club’s trio had the advantage of others close to them despite the limited total out. David Hoben had the best of us and comfortably beat the estimated time this event requires while Mick Harran once again had the better of Peter Hannell having reversed a 30 metre deficit on the first half having shot past just after the turn and held a similar lead all the way back. Although around 2 minutes short of the hour and a minute outside of their estimates, a very competitive race resulted in both feeling they had done themselves justice. |
