100 Miles Open Race, Battersea Park 28th - 29th Jul 07
Every 4 years Surrey Walking Club promotes and organises an open 100 miles event. As it turned out, the first 8 hours were warm and sunny during which the 50km was completed. However the next 8 hours produced torrential rain and this made life extremely difficult and sore for those hoping to continue to 100 miles and several were forced to give up. Of the four Surrey Walking Club men no-one first claim members completed the full 100 miles but we were more successful in the 50km where we won the team race. It is a considerable achievement to complete 100 miles within the 24 hour limit, especially in the sort of weather this particular summer evening produced. Those who do so are privileged to join the exclusive Brotherhood of Centurions and this time eight walkers achieved the feat for the first time in the terrible conditions – six were Dutch. one English and one German. It should be added that most of the UK contingent had previously achieved Centurion status.
