Enfield League 5 miles, Lee Valley 13th Mar 10
After a string of important A judged races it made a pleasant change to take part in this Enfield event- a much more friendly, local interclub affair. Despite the recent frequency of walks about 40 men and women toed the line on a relatively warm March afternoon cooled by a slight cold breeze. Stephen Crane walked a very strong race starting steadily and coming through to 5th in a time a little below his best but still a satisfying performance. Surrey Walking Club had six out, one of whom was second claim, and though missing several of their faster men managed equal points to second team and finished third by just one place with their last scorer. Gary Macdonald did well with a relative time just below his Inter-Counties result and a general improvement in position while David Hoben struggled a little probably due to a succession of events and concerns over style. Peter Hannell, with future events in mind, was more concerned with a fast early pace and slowed a little as the effort caught up later in the race. The race was started by national Race Walking Association President, Pam Ficken, who is also a member and past President of Surrey Walking Club.
