Pat Furey 5m Enfield  2nd Oct 10
October brings the new season of shorter road races, as we leave the track for the winter, the first being promoted with sponsored prizes by Essex walker Pat Furey. Conditions were unseasonably mild and escaped the rain showers and the sunny intervals covering the country. 44 starters was a good field although Surrey Walking Club had only three out, the majority coming from the Crane family. Stephen Crane returned after a quiet spell and his relatively slow time reflected this finishing not far ahead of father. Also quite close but behind Peter, David Hoben was close to his 11 minute mile target showing good pace after several, recent long distance events. The highlight, if this is the right term, was that the quiet road used for the race was also occupied by a learner driver, who carried on his manoeuvres despite the walkers. At this early stage of the Enfield league Surrey Walking Club’s good packing put them right up in 3rd points position.
