|Over 50 faced the starter for this popular 5 miler which, unusually, started with nearly a mile on the track as there was a Track and Field event being held on the same date so it was decided to make the walk part of the day’s event. This gave the other athletes the opportunity to see a number of good standard walkers enjoying their event – some of the walkers probably being encouraged by the atmosphere to start somewhat quicker than usual before completing the last 4 miles on the road. Surrey Walking Club had 9 out, including Kath Crilley, the first of Surrey’s female members to compete over a short distance for some time. The men’s team members were pleased with 3rd team medals despite one or two being off form. First home for Surrey was Shaun Lightman who like most found the heat of a beautiful Spring day but battled on well. Likewise Mick Harran and Peter Crane managed to keep up their pace in the latter stages as others faded. Click here to see photos from the race|
