|While conditions were by no means as bad as a couple of weeks previously this was certainly not the most pleasant day starting not too cold but with a strong, gusting wind making it feel so. During the race things deteriorated further as light rain began to fall. The racers plugged on and times were not at all bad but it was the officials who really suffered. Surrey Walking Club’s five were close in position although times were spread widely. The best performance came from Mick Harran who, after a steady start respecting the conditions, held his position well and was rewarded with an improved time although some doubts over the length of the course were expressed. Immediately behind him Paul King adopted a similar pattern although he fell back a little in the fourth and last lap.
