|The planned start to the Enfield League in January was cancelled due to snow so this week got the season off to a cold start over the usual 5 miles. The weather was only 2 degrees C with a fresh easterly breeze making it feel like minus 2 degrees but a reasonable field 43 finished of whom 6 were Surrey Walking Club members. Soon after the start the field divided into a number of groups. After the first of five laps Deuter Fabian of Hillingdon and Francisco Reis had a commanding lead from Grazina Narviliene. Over the last two laps Deuter Fabian drew away to win in 39m 35s, a little below his best after a break. A group consisting of Callum Wilkinson, first Surrey man, David Crane, Steve Uttley Chris Hobbs and Steve Allen chased Grazina. Eventually Callum drew clear closely followed by David Crane who finished in 43.09 which represented a further step up. Further down the field Shaun Lightman had a battle with John Ralph, Steve Allen and Stuart Bennett. He got the better of Stuart but was beaten by John Ralph and Steve Allen. He finished in 47m 31s around current expectation. Second claimer Paul King had a lonely race finishing in 22nd position in 50m 22s but not far from his 50 minute target. Mick Harran had a race long battle with Anne Belchambers and eventually edged her out of 23rd position to finish in 51m 30s. Peter Crane and Dave Delaney walked together to finish in 34 and 35th positions respectively with Peter coming back towards his November form.
