Alf Palmer 5km, Steyning AC, Broadbridge Heath 13th Dec 14
An early frost had been burned off the track by the remarkably strong winter sunshine as almost 30 set off with the 8 strong young presence doing just 3km. Surrey Walking Club were well represented in the senior race with 7 out, of whom Malcolm Martin was first home. The first two in the race, both excelling in their very different age-groups, were soon clear as Under 20 Luc Legon successfully held a small gap on M65 Ian Richards. This was a fast event however and 3rd and 4th were not far behind at a pace Malcolm, in 5th, could not hold on this occasion. He had no competition from the rest as he lapped the 6th finisher. The usual midfield SWC pack of Flint, Gaston and Hannell were spread over just half a lap a little further back and were interspersed with several very welcome newcomers from the running side. Paul Gaston had the best race in this group but it was David Hoben, only a little behind them, who put up the best SWC performance overall as he left Angela Martin behind. On this occasion he was not far from Shaun Lightman who was taking it easy. Shaun’s appearance was the best news of the event as he returns after serious illness and walked at a fair pace in the circumstances without overdoing his effort.
