Surrey 3km track Walking Championships, Kingsmeadow 25th May 14
At Kingston the convincing winner was Penelope Cummings representing her track club, Herne Hill Harriers. Conditions were very different with the hot sunny weather normally expected for these Championships and not seen enough this year to prepare the athletes, although the winner scored a personal best to break 17 minutes. The men’s champion was SWC’s Mick Harran who passed Peter Hannell with 150 metres to go and when on to win by 5 secs. Both missed the 18 minute target but Harran’s performance was slightly ahead of recent results. Feeling the heat and unused to the sprint distance SWC’s newcomer to race-walking, Sandra Campbell, was unable to avoid last place but battled on and should get nearer to 21 minutes as she improves and becomes more used to the event and the heat.
