|Eight walkers faced the starter although the black clouds, in what had been a clear blue sky most of the day, were sharing the competitors’ attention. There was a strong breeze however and in fact the rain held off. There were none of the usual Blackheath novice walkers and no guests so the whole field were Surrey Walking Club members although two were second claim Blackheath & Bromley. These included Shaun Lightman who was second in the race to take the B&B championship in a good time missing his target 17 minutes by only 1 second. His race was made easier as he was able to leave the next walker earlier on than expected and ended 40 metres clear. This in no way diminishes the performance of the overall 3rd placer who was none other than 100 mile specialist Sandra Brown who was facing her regular distance the following week-end. Her time still wasn’t too bad anyway as she managed to set a new age-group British record for 3km – 1/54th of 100 miles. The winner of the race and thus the SWC Championship, was Malcolm Martin with, yet again, a good time not far off his 3km best. Sandra Brown was naturally first SWC woman. The race incorporated an SWC handicap and while Shaun and Malcolm walked well their times adjusted by their handicaps left them 2nd and 3rd respectively behind handicap winner Peter Crane. Peter, who finished not far behind Angela, benefited from the competition to beat his last 3km half a minute. 4th in the handicap was Sandra Campbell with a new p.b. for 3km and a time in line with her races over other distances.|
