|The 20km race was a National Championship and as such was poorly attended however for Surrey Walking Club it was most successful with a full team in both men’s and women’s event and with both team victors with the men also winning the 4 to score competition. Within the Club’s walkers it was Sandra Brown’s show as she was first home having passed Malcolm Martin mid-race as she walked steadily for 20 laps at just under 6 minute 1km throughout. She was rewarded by breaking the W65 age-group British record by more than 14 minutes and the bronze championship medal. Second home was Malcolm in a pb for the distance in a time only just below the 20 km equivalent of his recent string of bests at shorter distances. The course, a cycle track, was excellent in the way of surface, facilities and gradient (only slight) but happened to be quite windy with rain threatening. The performances of the other SWC fell into two groups with Paul King, Sandra Campbell and Chris joining Sandra Brown with good times while Shaun Lightman and Peter Hannell struggled while Angela Martin was near her last 20km time.
