|The 88th edition of this race was held near Lee Valley Stadium as the traditional course in Enfield suffers from slippery leaves in the Autumn damp while a dry surface at Lee gave a number of fast times. It was cold and windy but several of the 8 Surrey Walking Club visitors were among such times. A reasonable field of 44 for this famous race added to the prevalent good spirits and made the journey worthwhile. The first SWC was Malcolm Martin in the top 10 as he returns to racing showing no effect of his break. Also in the top half of the field, Dan Maskell was not far off 70 minutes as he battled with the group of 5 walkers close to him. Three minutes behind came the usual SWC pack of Paul King, Chris Flint and Mick Harran with the first two around three minutes ahead of recent times. Second claim Paul easily beat a good performance the previous week at the SWC 7 miles. David Hoben and Angela Martin finished only 7 seconds apart either side of 79 minutes which was again a good improvement. Altogether it was a good day for SWC both in terms of numbers and times.|
