|The weather was cold with a fresh breeze facing the 42 competitors at the beginning of the first of five laps of one mile and slowing most by a minute or so. At the front Francisco Reis (Ilford AC) built up a commanding lead to win by nearly three minutes in an excellent time for the conditions. He was followed home by Deuter Fabian (Hillingdon AC) in 42m 59s with Lithuanian Olympian, Grazina Narviliene (Belgrave), in third.
Further down the field Surrey Walking Club’s first man home, Dan Maskell, began slowly and overtook a bunch of walkers including Shaun Lightman within the first mile he then had a race long battle with Gary Smith finally drawing in front with 1 1/2 laps remaining. He finished in 13th position in 51m 17s a time which seemed to ignore the poor conditions. Two minutes behind him Shaun Lightman pulled away from Sean Pender (Enfield) and chased Ron Penfold (Steyning) and Helen Middleton (Enfield) but failed to make up ground on them. He crossed the line in 53m 14s in 19th place overall. Angela Martin had a race long battle with Anne Jones (Steyning) and Jo Miles (Hillingdon AC) which was just the inspiration for an excellent effort. Anne made the break after half with and Jo just got ahead with half a lap remaining. Angela finished in 25th place in 56m 28s, In her first race since the Roubaix 24hurs race, Kathy Crilley had a lonely journey finishing just inside 63 minutes.
