|On a very wet and windy afternoon 13 intrepid walkers faced the starter for this countryside 10km walk. The course was slightly different, avoiding the bypass crossing and extended at the far end. Ian Richards of Steyning soon took a commanding lead and was never headed - although his style caused some concern. He finished in 51m 50s and followed home somewhat distantly by Trevor Jones, seven and a half minutes later, and Jim Ball (both of Steyning) two minutes behind Trevor. Finishing in 6th place was Surrey Walking Club’s first of four starters, Paul Gaston. He had a race long battle with Stuart Maidment (Steyning) with Gaston going ahead before Maidment at halfway with Gaston making a sucessful effort to overtake Maidment near the finish. Packing toward the the back of the field, with the other SWC, was David Hoben who had a good race shadowing Brian Kirkdale (Hastings) before the latter drew away after 7km. David finished in 73m 50s. Chris Flint and Mick Harran closed for the club both having a fairly solitary race a few minutes behind. The weather probably accounted for slightly slower times generally and especially for the last four finishers except for David Hoben who seemed the least put off. The buster handicap was run in conjunction with the race where each competitor has to estimate his finishing time. Kirkdale guessed his time to within 2 seconds to win this unusual competition followed by Chris who was only 1m and 11s adrift.
