The Strollers : FAQs about Strolling

What is a typical stroll?
Strolls are walks about 20 miles in length - sometimes less in winter. The pace is steady with a stop for lunch at a pub and where possible a stop for afternoon tea. During the winter months the end of the walk will usually be completed in the dark. So bring a torch

Where do they start?
All strolls start and finish at a railway station. Some strolls are linear but again they will finish at a railway station from where those travelling by car can return to their vehicle.

Where do you walk?
We have strolls in a variety of locations, the only criteria is that they must be accessible from the London area and by public transport. We try and fit the stroll to the time of year, thus the strolls on the coast (e.g. Sussex) and those involving longer  travel distances (e.g. Hampshire) tend to be held when the days are longer, the winter strolls are generally  in more accessible areas, e.g. Surrey or the Chilterns.

Do you have any longer strolls?
We organise weekends away in good walking areas  (e.g. the Cotswolds, Dorset) and have even organised some foreign holidays  (e,g, the Tour of Mt Blanc, Pyrenees).

What is the average size of the group?
This does vary but we tend to have smallish groups of around 8 to 10.

What should I wear?
Many of our members were lightweight boots and trainers are particularly popular in the summer. Some wear heavier boots, especially in the winter. It is really what you find comfortable bearing in mind the weather and terrain. You should also bring waterproofs and a torch in winter.

Am I fit enough?
Only you know that. However if you are reasonably fit and used to walking for a full day you should probably be OK. If you are not sure about your fitness level - then try half a day to start with.

Do I have to be a member before I take part in a stroll?
We like members to try out a stroll before applying to join Surrey Walking Club. Membership costs £5.00 per year and this includes copies of Strolling News and the Club Gazette.
