Surrey Hills Walk  (Part 1)

Boxhill/Westhumble to Guildford (c 13 miles/21kms)

This walk starts at Boxhill & Westhumble station (trains from London Victoria) & follows the North Downs Way  (NDW) to Guildford. 
OS Explorer maps 145 & 146. The route is very easy to follow as it is waymarked "North Downs Way"  as well as the "Acorn" sign for the whole route.
TL = turn left; TR = turn right; X rd = cross road; SO=straight on; cont=continue; BR= bear right; FR= fork right; NDW=North Downs Way; XTK=cross track;FP=footpath
start Turn  LEFT out of station forecourt (uphill) cont up lane past houses. TL up tarmac lane and then bear right on narrow path between trees and field. Cont upwards &  fork right on narrow path. X lane & follow path to road (Ranmore Common Rd)
1.25 m TR to follow path (now the NDW) past St Barnabas Church. X road to kissing gate.  TR (ignore downhill paths)  X field to gate & into wood (acorn post) cont SO for 0.5 miles to pass between barriers. TL downhill at XTK (by acorn post). In 150yds pass bridlegate & immediately R over stile. Cont along path (ignoring stile on R) to X stile in corner (acorn post)  & SO (passing more acorn posts) to rd.

TR & in 20yds TL uphill. In 40yds BL at acorn post & follow FP to fence (passing pillbox). TR thru bridlegate to field gate at White Downs Lease NT). Cont with fence on left (ignoring stiles) to enter Blatchford Down. TL down hill at NDW signpost and follow grassy path along downs. Jpin track from R and follow path then TR along fence. Ahead to barrier & TL on concrete path.

In 50yds TL & follow main track for 0.5miles to old low concrete tank (opposite acorn post) Ignore 2 tracks on R - go straight ahead & follow metalled TK for just over 1 miles - ignore all XTKs  to pass round field gate, stables & house. TR just past letter box.
Ahead to RD in 0.5miles ignoring 2 TKS to L. At RD, TR and in 30yds TL on FP to RD. X RD to West Hanger Open Space. GR 069492

7.5miles Ahead thru car park, past barrier and onto TK. Virtually SO main TK (ignoring all XFP & XTKs) to RD (A25)
CAREFUL: BUSY ROAD-BLIND CORNER. X RD & TR and in 15yds bear L (Newlands Corner)

8.7 miles 50 yards from entrance to car pk, bear quarter L, &  250 yards to drop diag. down hill to acorn post. Along main downs FP just to L of treeline for approx.0.7 miles.

At acorn post, where trees start on L,  fork L & follow FP SO at XFP in 60yds, to gap in hedge. After 40yds fork L past acorn posts thru barrier to RD.

X RD, up steps & TL to follow FP for 350yds to "Keepers Cottage". TL & in 10yds TR uphill & SO at first acorn post in 150 yds. In further 150yds at 2nd acorn post, turn quarter R on sandy track. In 90yds bear R past acorn posts, uphill for 400yds to St Marthas Church.

Pass to R of church along wall & ahead to go downhill thru pine trees for 600yds  (take care! rutted track) Go alongside right side of wooden fence & along left side of open space on sandy TK pass barrier to X drive after 200yds  - past "Southernway" along FP to RD.

X RD, TL & in 30yds TR past barrier & in 15yds TR on FP. In 60yds, fork L, & ahead for 320yds to bear L on wide sandy TK at edge of wood.

Go along TK for 1mile, passing white cottage on left, thru gate & SO at XTK to X RD. TL along FP for 340yds to RD.

X RD and ahead to gap in fence to Shalford Park crossing playing field and ahead for 160yds - aim for red post in trees/bushes. Join FP by acorn post to River Wey in 180yds. At river, TL to bridge and TR on river bank & continue on river bank directly into Guildford. At lock TL to path (with river on your right) and follow path and signpost to railway station  [about 13miles]

For those who would like to walk a little further - it is possible to continue to Farnham (an extra 13.5 miles.) Or, alternatively start the walk in Guildford through to Farnham which is a fairly flatish walk. The choice is yours.
