The next club race is the Xmas Cup over 5km on the 20th Dec and the next club stroll is on Sunday the 21st December to be led by Gail and John Elrick

Welcome to the Surrey Walking Club. The Club was originally formed in 1899 as a race walking club. We are still involved in race walking but we now promote a range of walking related activities including ultra distance walking and we have our own successful long distance social walking section known as the Strollers.

Next Club Stroll (Long Distance Walk)

Sunday 21 December. Winter walk from Osterley to Hammersmith (linear). Conductors John & Gail Elrick. Start Osterley Underground Station at 09:15 (Piccadilly Line). Parking available in side streets, e.g. Bassett Gardens.  Finish at Hammersmith Underground (Piccadilly, plus District and Hammersmith and City).

Route description: Winter is a good time to take in the Capital’s sights since they tend to be mainly visitor free. Our focus is on historic parks and their houses and the paths (including canals and rivers) that connect them. Starting with a circuit of  Osterley Park and House we use the Grand Union Canal tow path (including the magnificent flight of locks known as the Hanwell Flight)  and the Three Bridges (Brunel’s engineering achievement) to reach Brentford Dock and access to our next park, Syon Park and House. Lunch will be taken in one of the hostelries in old Isleworth (possibly the famous London Apprentice). To reach Kew Riverside we then cross Richmond Lock and pass Kew palace (no entry into Kew Gardens sadly due to the price) but will visit Kew Green to view the Church. Re-crossing the river we make our way via a very pretty stretch of river path (Strand on the Green) to Chiswick Park and House plus tea! The final stretch is easy walking via old Chiswick (including burial ground) and past some interesting houses (e.g. home of the Redgrave family, William Morris) to finish at Hammersmith Underground.

Explorer 161 approx.17 miles.
