Start: Eastbourne station 09:51 (London Victoria 08:24; Clapham Junction 08:31; East Croydon 08:40). Regular half-hourly return trains from Lewes. Route description: We leave Eastbourne station and join the South Downs Way to climb to Jevington and over Windover Hill, then descend into Alfriston, a pretty village in the scenic Cuckmere Valley, with a village green for our lunch stop. There are several good pubs and tea rooms, and benches on the green for those bringing a packed lunch. We continue over Firle Beacon before descending into Firle and then Glynde. Finally, we climb Mount Caburn and descend into Lewes. Explorer 122 & 123. Distance approx. 19 miles. |

Start: Burnham station 09:25 (Elizabeth Line, departs Farringdon 08.38, Paddington 08:47). Return from Langley - Elizabeth trains to London depart at 12, 25, 42 and 55 past. Route description: we head out of Burnham via a nature reserve and then make our way to a meander through Burnham Beeches. We then pass through a couple more woods and commons to our lunch spot, which can either be in the villages of Hedgerley or Fulmer depending on time and conditions. We then follow the Beeches Way to Black Rock and Langley Park Country Parks before a short stretch along the Slough branch of the Grand Union Canal to the end at Langley station. Picnic lunch advised although both potential lunch spots have a pub, and there is the possibility of a café stop in the country parks if they’re still open! |
